Dandruff: A curse for hair

Dandruff is a serious hair problem that affects one in every six persons.
Heavy dandruff is a condition which must be nipped in the bud. Dandruff can be of two types – scaly or dry and oily. The fall of your hair and the greasy condition is known as seborrheic dermatitis. The latter condition is caused by overactive sebaceous glands. Ultimately, dandruff leads to loss of hair and even baldness. A number of anti dandruff lotions, creams, shampoos and oils are available and can be used to combat this condition. Simple home remedies can also be used for effective control of dandruff.

Controlling Dandruff:

Dandruff may be controlled substantially by following a strict diet comprising of vitamin B supplements, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and unrefined carbohydrates.

Hot oil treatment is the simplest method to cure dandruff. Massage hot olive, Aloe or Almond oil onto the scalp. Wrap a hot towel around the head and rinse off.

Alternatively you may massage hot oil into the scalp and leave it overnight. Use whey liquid for the final rinse.

Mix cedar vinegar in hot water and apply all over the scalp. Leave it overnight and rinse off in the morning using an egg shampoo.

Apply a well beaten raw egg to the scalp once a week.

A strong infusion of rosemary will serve as a good scalp massage for dandruff.

Mix four table spoons of whey in four table spoons of camphor water. Apply this infusion to the scalp and wash off after three hours.

Grind fresh fenugreek leaves to a paste and apply to the scalp. Wash off after fifteen minutes.

Application of brandy on the scalp is said to clear dandruff.

Extract thick coconut milk and mix with hot water and add lemon juice to make a solution for the scalp. Allow it to remain on the hair for half an hour. Rinse off with water.

For a persistent scalp disorder you must consult your dermatologist at the earliest.

You may use any after shampoo protein rinse to control dandruff.

Any good anti dandruff shampoo will work, provided you stick to the treatment.

Hair loss and Dandruff:

Hair loss due to dandruff accompanied with infection is fairly common. Dandruff appears in the form of scales of skin that fall from the scalp. Dry flakes cover the scalp in small patches at first and then involve the entire scalp surface, manifesting as fine powdery scales covering the head. The oily type of dandruff manifests itself as an accumulation of thick crust. Dandruff can spread beyond the scalp to the forehead, ears, neck, face etc. causing skin irritation and itching. It is caused due to an increased secretion of sebum from the sebaceous glands. This may be a familial trait. Increased oil secretion and perspiration on the scalp worsens the condition. In fact, for some individuals dandruff is an emotional barometer. If you have excessive dandruff you must avoid the intake of a high fat diet comprising of butter, cream, cheese, chocolates etc.

A clean scalp leaves no scope for dandruff:

Shampooing at least once a week and keeping the scalp clean is one of the best ways to get rid of dandruff. Shampoos containing selenium sulphide, resorcin, zinc and pyriphionate are excellent. In severe cases, where bacterial infection is prominent, steroids combined with anti-bacterial preparations are helpful. Vitamin B and Vitamin B12 should also be included in the diet. Since dandruff occurs due to increased secretion of oil on the scalp, this can be neutralized by using lemon, curd, buttermilk and other traditional beauty aids. Ozone treatment is also one of the most effective techniques of getting rid of dandruff which focuses on the application of high frequency ozone rays to the scalp. The heat radiated by the rays has a germicidal effect on the scalp. However, excess heat may prove harmful leading to hair loss.
