June 23, 2009
Split ends are a common condition which is dreaded by almost all women. They are most often seen in long hair, but short hair is no less safe. However the problem of split ends can be resolved by good hair maintenance. Read on to know more.
Split ends or trichoptlosis occur when the defensive cuticle has been stripped away from the ends of hair fibres. They are more likely to develop in dry and brittle hair with the typical causes being damage due to excessive and vigorous dying and brushing of hair.
The removed hair cuticle is impossible to be replaced. These split ends can be three or four strands which could be as long as three to four centimeters in length. The main reasons for split ends are:
Natural oils: Loss of natural oils from the scalp and hair can fail to reach the ends making your hair more prone to split ends.
Heat: Prolonged exposure to sun, usage of heat producing products like straighteners and dryers can result in dry and brittle hair which is prone to split ends.
Trimming: Regular trimming of hair is necessary to avoid the problem of split ends. Make sure you trim your hair regularly to stay away from this problem.
Coloring: Excessive colouring, dyeing and highlighting of hair can also cause dry brittle ends.
Brushes: The quality of your combs and brushes can also cause dry brittle ends. Make sure you use a good quality hair brush and comb.
In earlier days, women used to burn off the ends of their hair to get rid of split ends. However lately, the number one means to prevent this issue is by regular trimming.
Other means of removing split ends are:
Specialized products: Use specialist products which are designed to cure the problem of split ends.
Deep conditioning: Deep Conditioning treatments should be undertaken at least once every week.
Heat producing products: If your hair is prone to split ends, limit the use of ceramic straighteners and hair dryers.
Shampoo: Shampoo and condition your hair after a workout or after sweating as the salt from perspiration will erode your hair.
Others: Avoid unnecessary touching, scratching and playing with hair. Also invest in good quality brushes and combs.
Lastly do no ignore split ends at any cost especially when you want to grow your hair or keep it long.
