Hair Structure
What is hair structure? Hair structure is basically defined as the structure of the hair which is composed of hair strands. The most important element in the hair structure is the protein keratin, which is also a very important element in producing the nails. An important role is also played by the hair shaft, which is a very important element of the hair structure, available above the scalp.
There is great complexity in understanding the hair structure, as hair structure is composed of hair strands which have three different layers. Each layer of the hair strand has a special function of its own. It is very important to understand the functioning of each layer to understand the hair structure.
Medulla is the first layer of the hair strand that is most of the times found in thick hair. It is the inner layer of the hair strand.
The second layer is called as the cortex and is known as the middle layer of the hair strand. This layer gives strength, color and texture to the hair.
The third layer of the hair strand is called as cuticle, which is the outer most layer, and is colorless and thin. It provides protection to the cortex.
While understanding the concept of hair structure, it is also important to understand the concept of structure of the hair roots. The roots of the hair are found below the skin’s surface and are enclosed by hair follicles. At the hair follicle’s base, dermal papilla is located, which is a very effective element in providing nourishment to the hair follicle for producing new hair. Thus, there is no doubt that dermal papilla is a very important element in the hair growth cycle, where the hair goes through a cycle of growing of hair, shedding of hair and re-growth of new hair.
The above discussion on hair structure and hair root structure clearly reveal that the hair structure passes through different stages and phases to let the hair grow in a cyclical manner. To understand the hair growth cycle, it is very important to understand the structure of the hair, which has been very well described above.
