Home Remedies to Cure Dandruff

Dandruff refers to the flakes that occur on the scalp which can be seen on one’s shoulders, forehead, eyebrows and clothes. Excessive flaking of scalp can cause an irritating condition which is associated with bacteria. Dandruff can also be spread around by the use of common towels, soaps, combs and hairbrushes.
Dry dandruff is characterized by an itchy scalp leading to small white scales scattering in the hair. Waxy dandruff occurs when the flakes are mixed with sebum which causes it to stick to the scalp in patches.
The causes of dandruff could be many including – impairment of general health, poor nutrition, deficiency of zinc, fungus (malassezia furfur), oily scalp, food allergies, excessive perspiration, stress, yeast infections, high use of alkaline soaps and shampoos, exposure to dust and extreme dry or cold weathers.
The following treatments would help in solving the problem of dandruff:
Hot Oil Therapy: Hot oil therapy also helps cure dandruff. It is best to rub oil in the hair at bed time and next morning an hour before shampooing, rub a mixture of lemon juice and vinegar into the scalp.
Steam Bath: Massaging hot oil and wrapping a hot damp towel on the head for sometime before getting a hot steam bath works excellently for the hair and scalp.
Lemon: Peel the skin of lemon and immerse it into coconut oil for 8 – 10 days. Keep this under direct sunlight. Take the peels out and use the oil mixture for dandruff free hair. Fresh lemon juice can also be added to the last wash after shampooing. This result in dandruff free, glowing and shiny hair.
Beetroot: Beetroot juice and vinegar work excellently on the scalp to cure dandruff. Beetroot juice mixed with ginger juice also helps in curing dandruff. Mash beetroot leaves with henna to prevent hair fall and dandruff.
Oils: Massage scalp with a mixture of almond oil and olive oil. Leave it on for about five to ten minutes and rinse properly.
Fenugreek seeds: Soak three tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Grind the seeds and apply this paste on the scalp and leave it for half an hour. Rinse hair properly.
Cider vinegar: Cider vinegar added to the last wash after shampooing also helps prevent dandruff. Cider vinegar can also be added to equal amounts of water and dabbed in hair with cotton wool before shampooing.
Sun exposure: Prolonged exposure of hair to the rays of sun also results in dandruff.
Eggs: Beat two eggs with two tablespoons of water in it. Moist hair and apply the mixture over the hair. Let the mixture stay on for ten to fifteen minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water.
Diet: Diet plays an important role in the treatment of dandruff. The diet should consist of fresh juicy fruits, citrus fruits, sprouted seeds, raw nuts and whole grain cereals. Fatty foods containing starch should be restricted.
