Home Remedies to Cure Dandruff

June 23, 2009

Dandruff refers to the flakes that occur on the scalp which can be seen on one’s shoulders, forehead, eyebrows and clothes. Excessive flaking of scalp can cause an irritating condition which is associated with bacteria. Dandruff can also be spread around by the use of common towels, soaps, combs and hairbrushes.

Dry dandruff is characterized by an itchy scalp leading to small white scales scattering in the hair. Waxy dandruff occurs when the flakes are mixed with sebum which causes it to stick to the scalp in patches.

The  causes of dandruff could be many including – impairment of general health, poor nutrition, deficiency of zinc, fungus (malassezia furfur), oily scalp, food allergies, excessive perspiration, stress, yeast infections, high use of alkaline soaps and shampoos, exposure to dust and extreme dry or cold weathers.

The following treatments would help in solving the problem of dandruff:

Hot Oil Therapy: Hot oil therapy also helps  cure dandruff. It is best to rub oil in the hair at bed time and next morning an hour before shampooing, rub a mixture of lemon juice and vinegar into the scalp.

Fenugreek seeds: Soak three tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Grind the seeds and apply this paste on the scalp and leave it for half an hour. Rinse hair properly.

Cider vinegar: Cider vinegar added to the last wash after shampooing also helps prevent dandruff. Cider vinegar can also be added to equal amounts of water and dabbed in hair with cotton wool before shampooing.
