Low Thyroid and Hair Loss
Long, beautiful and shining hair is the utmost desire of all. People tend to go in for a lot of treatments and hair care products to have healthy hair. Any kind of problem with the hair is not taken in a good sense and creates a lot of tension in the minds of people.
The different types of hair problems are split ends, dandruff, frizzy hair, and hair loss. Hair loss is a problem which is a cause of great concern and disturbs the mindset of people. Hair loss can be due to many factors such as lack of proper diet, inadequate level of nutrition and moisture to the hair, extended medication, or some prolonged illness.
The thyroid level of a person also affects the hair of an individual. It determines the hair function, hair re-growth and also the hair loss. Low thyroid often results in early graying of hair and loss of outer eyebrows.
Diffuse telogen effluvium type of hair loss is witnessed in approximately 50 % cases in case of hypothyroid. Initially hair loss is limited to the scalp, but spreads towards eyebrows, chest, arms, and leg hair, thereafter. There may be cases where diffuse loss of pubic hair also occurs.
The most distinctive symptom of hypothyroidism is the loss of the outer one third of eyebrow hair, and the condition is called “Hertoghe’s symptom”. However, this is a rare symptom, and is found in only 25% of the people having hypothyroidism.
Normally, it is believed that females suffering from thyroid disease witness hair fall on account of decreased metabolism in their scalp follicles, which results in an early release of the shaft, root and all. It also happens that the hair sometimes becomes too brittle, thus causing hair loss on account of split ends and hair breakage.
It is very essential for thyroid to function properly; else there may be a lot of problems, thus causing hair loss. Low thyroid level reduces the minerals, nutrients, and moisture content of the hair, thus causing hair loss.
