What Causes Gray Hair in Men

Pigmentation is the source of colour to all types or hair. Whether your hair is black, blonde, red or brown – the colour comes from pigmentation. Melanin: All hair is at first white, which changes colour when hair follicles or melanin comes in and creates pigmentation or colour to the hair. The higher the pigmentation, the darker the shade of hair colour would be. If some one has more of white hair, the level of melanin in their hair is low.
Transparent Hair: As one ages, the level of melanin production reduces making hair colourless or transparent. This results in hair appearing to be white or gray.
Genetics: Losing hair pigmentation or colour is also dependent on genetics. If your parents have has early gray hair, chances are you too would have them early.
Smoking: Smoking can also cause hair to lose pigmentation at an early age. Infact smokers lose upto four times more pigment as compared to non-smokers.
Other Causes: Other reasons for early greying of hair are thyroid imbalance or vitamin B12 deficiency.
