Why Hair Is Weakest When Wet
There is no doubt that hair are very strong and single hair strand can hold around 100 grams of weight, without any breakage. So, the question arises why the hair are weakest when they are wet. Let us here discuss about this aspect in detail.
There is no doubt that the hair are very weak when wet. Natural bonds of hydrogen in hair are broken down due to the water in hair. The reformation process of the natural bonds of hydrogen takes place as the hair gets dried; however, they are very weak when they are wet. Hydrogen bonds are the bonds which link keratin chains present in each hair strand.
The hydrogen bonds of the hair are broken when hair are wet, which eventually gets reformed with the hair drying process. During the breakage of the bonds, the hair shape changes. This is the reason why there is a change in hair shape when the wet hair are treated with rollers or any other hair styling equipment.
The loss in the hair shape when the hair are wet is because of the fact of breakage of bonds in hair due to water. This results in loss of hair texture.
There is no doubt that wet hair are very easy to style with the help of hair styling equipments like curlers and rollers; however, on the hair other hand they easily get damaged. One may see excessive breakage of the wet hair, when they are towel blotted, detangled, combed or brushed.
Let us here discuss about some of the ways of preventing wet hair from getting damaged.
Additional strength to the hair can be imparted by making use of conditioner on the hair that can be rinsed out. Make sure to rinse the hair with cool water, so that the hair cuticles are closed.
The excess water in the hair can be squeezed with the help of smooth fingers. Make sure that the water is squeezed from the hair ends and not from hair roots.
While towel blotting the hair, make sure not to rub the hair vigorously. Vigorous rubbing of the hair may cause hair breakage.
Make sure to be very careful while detangling the hair. A wide tooth comb should be used for detangling the hair.
